PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Another year of bonsai is over and a new and exciting dragon bonsai year is here.  This should be an exciting time for bonsai, we have some young and talented bonsai professionals planned for our club demonstrations.   Starting the year off we have Julian Tsai, Julian will discuss and demonstrate the concept of how grafting is used with your bonsai.  Come out and support Julian, bring some food or drinks, questions on why and how, and even a tree if you have questions on where to graft.
NEXT MEETING

BAIKOEN SILHOUETTES SHOW

January is the Baikoen Bonsai Winter Silhouettes show, this is a must see show for its beauty and celebration of trees in their winter state.  Saturday night is their banquet with great food, entertainment by a local taiko group, and ending with a raffle and auction of bonsai stuff.

BONSAI-A-THON – YOUNG CHOE

February will bring the annual Bonsai-A-thon to southern California, we have the honor of hosting the talented “articulturist” Young Choe and her love of kusumono. Workshops will be happening around the Los Angeles area as well as at the Huntington Gardens during the Bonsai A Thon weekend.

BEGINNERS WORKSHOPS – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Dai Ichi will be helping with multiple bonsai workshops during the year, we are always looking for help. If your interested in helping teach at these workshops just let me know.  You may not be teaching the whole workshop but we will have you focus on 1 or 2 students. These workshops are fun, rewarding and a great way to share your knowledge with beginners.

IN MEMORIUM

And lastly, It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of an American Bonsai Legend, Frank Goya. Frank was a pillar of the California and US bonsai community and he passed on Friday January 5th at the age of 100. Frank was a lifetime DIBK member and supporter of our club. Our deepest condolences go out to the Goya family.

Thank you for all the support,

Doyle Saito
