The festival highlights and educates on several Japanese art forms and funds raised during the festival support the Torrance Sister City Association (TSCA) and their\u00a0student\u00a0exchange program.<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/cf8a8cc28dade04b753db9bd1\/images\/79f7d730-055e-2b7c-05df-2e813e2367a2.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" data-file-id=\"7333564\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/cf8a8cc28dade04b753db9bd1\/images\/03b17908-a3a8-77a8-5141-b9d0e142cdf8.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" data-file-id=\"7333568\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/cf8a8cc28dade04b753db9bd1\/images\/2e89eb3c-0764-a78d-2199-25f77f59db4b.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" data-file-id=\"7333572\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/cf8a8cc28dade04b753db9bd1\/images\/bfb8ffbd-9440-e144-9dd6-9ccafe0f9b30.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" data-file-id=\"7333576\" \/><\/p>\n<div>Attendees\u00a0had a wonderful time experiencing the many Japanese arts that were displayed and performed.\u00a0 The most noticeable were the taiko drums that marked the start and end of the festival.\u00a0 One could feel the sound reverberating in your heart during the performances!\u00a0 The other art forms shared there were just as impressive and entertaining.\u00a0 There were hands-on workshops for calligraphy, origami, and flowering arranging and live demonstrations of ikenobo (flowering arranging), oshie (3-D picture making), tea ceremony, music, folk dancing, kamishibai (storytelling), kimono dressing, martial arts (judo, karate &amp; kendo), and candy making.\u00a0 Jason tried to get the famous candy maker to create a bonsai shaped candy for the club but he was only making\u00a0animal\u00a0shapes this time due to the long lines.\u00a0 Maybe next time!<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/cf8a8cc28dade04b753db9bd1\/images\/17e2e572-2e56-6cda-87ab-0d7dca9161d4.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" data-file-id=\"7333580\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/cf8a8cc28dade04b753db9bd1\/images\/38c61251-c129-e014-7490-da472fe57cc6.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" data-file-id=\"7333584\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/cf8a8cc28dade04b753db9bd1\/images\/109b57b9-b17c-57a8-bdc3-cf9a1b05557b.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" data-file-id=\"7333588\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>There was also good food and crafts for sale at the festival.\u00a0 It seemed like our booth had a never-ending supply of dango, sweet Japanese dumplings.<\/p>\n<p>Now onto our favorite Japanese art form,\u00a0<strong><em>bonsai<\/em><\/strong>!\u00a0 Dai Ichi Bonsai Kai had an impressive bonsai display of five trees each with their own accent plants.\u00a0 Doyle Saito displayed a pyracantha, Japanese maple, and Japanese black pine.\u00a0 Jason Saito displayed a 70-pound juniper saikei balanced on two rocks, which made it look like it was floating weightless\u00a0on air.\u00a0 And Kelly Lui got to\u00a0display a small prostrata juniper that she won at a club raffle.\u00a0 There were also three live bonsai demonstrations across the two-day festival.\u00a0 The demonstrations were done by Jason, Louis Carrillo, and Mel Ikeda with Kelly.\u00a0 Our booth was visited by old friends of the club and many people interested in the art of bonsai.\u00a0 We even had a few people from that we met at the festival show up at our most recent club meeting.<\/p>\n<p>All-in-all, it was a great cause that our club supported and we got to share our love of bonsai with a\u00a0lot of people.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to Doyle, Jason, Dan, Kevin, Louis, Mel and Kelly for helping setup and manage our booth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2023 Bunka-Sai Japanese Cultural Festival in Torrance By Kelly Lui On April 15th and 16th, Dai Ichi Bonsai Kai was again honored to participate in the annual Bunka-Sai Japanese Cultural Festival in Torrance.
