PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE<\/strong><\/p>\n

What to do in February here in southern California? We are blessed with moderate temperatures, and warm sun every day, with a little rain sprinkled in now and then. Our December\/January rainfall has taken California out of its drought state to a normal max capacity water level.\u00a0Pretty amazing.\u00a0It was nice to water so much less during this time, I think at one point I didn\u2019t water for over a week.\u00a0The end of January saw freezing temperatures crossing the US, wintering trees is a major step for bonsai enthusiasts across the country. The ability to work on trees, repotting and pruning will not be available to many for a couple more months.\u00a0Back here in SoCal we are starting the repotting season or in some areas halfway through repotting season.\u00a0Pruning back your deciduous trees and cleaning and thining your junipers are one of the many steps in fall\/winter care of your trees.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

February will bring many opportunities for bonsai enthusiasts, we have the Bonsai-A-thon at the end of the month, this is the Huntington\u2019s biggest fundraising event for the year.\u00a0Vendors, demonstrators, a strong raffle and auction are a few of the many events available.\u00a0 This years headliner will be Sergio Cuan from the east coast.\u00a0CBS will be displaying trees at the Huntington during the same weekend.\u00a0It will be the California Bonsai Society\u2019s annual show but both events lumped into the same days.<\/p>\n

Our February demonstrator will be the California bonsai Society’s Visiting Artists Program demonstrator Milan Karpisek. Milan will be showcasing some of the bonsai techniques he utilizes when styling his award winning trees. You can read more about Milan below:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Monthly workshops \u2013 Where both beginning and advanced DIBK members\u00a0can learn the proper techniques to creating beautiful, healthy \u00a0bonsai.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Exhibitions \u2013 Every year, DIBK produces our annual Exhibition & Sale, as well as participating in other local club and organization exhibitions, where our club and its members best trees are proudly displayed.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Field trips \u2013 Tour the collections of established local bonsai artists and members. DIBK Members can learn growing techniques and see how other artists care for and display their collections.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Buying Trips \u2013 DIBK members enjoy specially arranged group visits to nurseries throughout California, to view and acquire developed and pre-bonsai specimen.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Auctions \u2013 Provides DIBK members the opportunity to acquire fantastic bonsai material at great prices.<\/p>\n
