PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Spring in SoCal is a very busy and important time in a bonsai practioner’s schedule. Repotting season is in full swing, your deciduous trees should be pushing new leaves, and your conifers are elongating. All your trees are hungry for food and nutrients so lay down those fertilizer cakes or those special recipe teabags, maybe a nice foliar shower feeding. The many days of rain, cool or mild conditions, and new shoot growth make for a wonderful breeding ground for pests and fungus. Mites, aphids, larva of many varieties, grasshoppers and any number of other pests are feasting and breeding in these conditions. Try to incorporate a monthly fungicide/insecticide treatment, you can also add granular insecticides into your teabag recipe.

Our feature demonstrator for March will be internationally acclaimed bonsai artist Will Baddeley. Will has been creating trees for over 27 years now. Although heavily influenced by Colin Lewis and Kev Willson, he is pretty much self taught. He is known for his more naturalistic carving and working with native trees as well as more traditional species, Will works across Europe and the US.

He has schools in Italy and Denmark and has worked for many years in the Czech Republic and Belgium. Will has been asked to work in the US, New Zealand and Australia this year. Private collections or group workshops are his main occupation; the latter being a lead in gaining access, confidence and technique with carving pruning and styling bonsai at all levels. Mr. Baddeley will be demonstrating advanced techniques in deadwood tree carving.

This month we are hosting a workshop teaching bonsai to the Hermosa Hermanos organization. Mother’s workings with their sons to enrich their lives through volunteerism and community involvement. We are looking for some additional teachers for the workshop.
Sunday March 23 from 12:00 to 3:00
The locations will be the Gardena Valley JCI, the same room as our regular meeting.
The Torrance Bunka-Sai Japanese Cultural Festival will be the beginning of April. Dai Ichi has been asked to display bonsai and to do some short demonstrations for the show. If you would like to show a tree and/or perform a short 45minute demonstration please let me know.

Welcome back bonsai friends and thank you for all your support.
