PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

August finds Los Angeles in another hot spell, its not the heat it’s the humidity. We always hear its not hot in Los Angeles, it’s a dry heat, its still hot. Watering more often and increasing the duration of the watering cycle or the time it takes to water is just another step in the bonsai process. The process of watering is one of the most important topics in a bonsai enthusiast’s task toolkit. Every tree has a unique need, where you live, what is the weather like, what is your water quality, what is your soil mix, do your trees like overhead watering, santa ana winds, so many variables and yet they all need to be watered. Watering is not something you learn overnight, its not a task you can pick up from youtube but it is something you can gain knowledge just by doing it.

Keeping your trees cool, starts with watering but you can add shade cloth, you can cover the pots with styrfoam, bury your trees in sand or double potting your trees. I know of people who wrap their pots in aluminum foil. There are many inventive ways to keep your trees cool.
