PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The past two months have seen unusually high temperatures within the LA basin. High temperatures along with high humidity makes bonsai a tough and frustrating journey. Shade cloth, covers for your pots, watering multiple times a day are some of the solutions for these conditions. Some trees are loving this heat, while most deciduous trees are suffering. Leaf burn and brown edges are common for maple and other deciduous trees here in Los Angeles. While the black pines and junipers are happy with more sunlight and high temperatures, white pines and red pines have a less tolerant reaction to the blinding sunlight.
As I write this message, its been raining for the past 6-7 hours and is expected to continue for another 4-5 hours. Hurricane Marie has delivered needed rain, without the strong winds and other devastation a hurricane can bring. Thank you mother nature
I would like to take some time to thank the bonsai families that have donated many things to our club. Pots, slab stands, trees, magazines and books are some of the many bonsai things we have received to support our club. Thank you to Joyce and James Sasaki, Mr and Mrs T Oda, Ann and Paul Ito her brother Roy and her father Shigeru Yoshimitsu. These donations help fund our club, fill the auction and raffle tables and keep the bonsai fun going forward.
Our September demonstrator is Daniel Deephouse. Daniel is a lifelong bonsai practitioner and educator originally from Perth, Australia. He began studying bonsai in 1980 at the age of eight under the guidance of his grandmother Elizabeth Deephouse and has spent more than four decades developing his practice through continued study, travel, and hands-on work with trees.
Daniel has been volunteering with the bonsai program at The Huntington Library & Botanical Gardens since 2019, where he is now the Assistant Curator of Bonsai, supporting the care, exhibition, and ongoing development of the collection, as well as the volunteer program. He is an active member of the Santa Anita Bonsai Club and Sansui Kai Bonsai Club, and he serves on the advisory board of the Japanese Garden at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant. His work blends traditional and modern bonsai practices, grounded in continual learning, with living trees serving as a vessel for connection to nature, to one another, and to community.
