PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Fall is finally here, cooler temperatures and a little rain is always welcome. Well if that were only true, extreme heat warnings are blasting the area and everyone is ducking for shade and relief. The trees are suffering and we are looking for that cooling trend. I hope everyone has delayed taking down the shade cloth and not started their fall/winter routines yet.

My deciduous trees are all having problems, brown and burnt tips, thirsting for more water, I usually prune all the leave on the large maples and defoliate the trees. This year I’m leaving all the leaves to cast any additional shade I can get on the other trees below them.

This month we will have a little club business to take care of, club elections.

This month’s demonstrator is Daniel Martinez. With nearly a decade of experience in the art of bonsai, Daniel has cultivated a deep passion and expertise in this ancient practice. Under the mentorship of Ryan Neil, one of the foremost bonsai professionals in the United States, Daniel has honed his skills and developed an understanding of bonsai aesthetics and techniques. He has studied under many other notable bonsai professionals throughout California and Colorado.

Daniel’s personal collection is a testament to his dedication, featuring a diverse array of species including junipers, pines, cypresses, olives, redwoods, and boxwoods. Among these are several collected yamadori specimens, some of which are over 400 years old, showcasing the remarkable history and beauty of these living sculptures.

Daniel is an active member of the Santa Barbara Bonsai Club, an organization dedicated to fostering a love for bonsai among enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Welcome back bonsai and thank you for all your support!
