PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
This month brings us the end of spring and most of the LA basin will be hot with temperatures reaching into the 100’s already. Shade cloth is a must and watering multiple times a day is a norm, those little shohin and mame trees need constant care and watering. You can try and help your shohin trees by placing the tree in another pot with soil or sand to keep the roots cooler. In some varieties like princess persimmon and chojubai quince you can propagate these by letting the roots grow into these secondary pots and when its time to cut back the upper tree/pot letting those roots in the lower pot grow on their own-root cuttings.
I would like to take this time to thank all the members of the board who make things happen.
CJ Harmatz – DIBK Treasurer – CJ handles all the money and makes sure everything gets done.
Jason Saito – He has many titles and responsibilities but he makes our club shine, from the old newsletter, current postings, facebook presence, and our website. He handles everything our club uses that people will see.
Kevin Sweeney – DIBK Raffle Chair – We always have a great selection of pot, plants, tools, magazines, and even girl scout cookies on our raffle table.
Dan Sawada – DIBK Publicity Chair – Dan’s new to the job but has done a great job for us.
Barry Miller – DIBK photographer and Hospitality Chair – Barry always makes sure we have food and drink to go around.
We will be looking for some new folks to help with the club, we have open positions and will be having spots opening up soon. If you are interested in helping with the club please let us know.
This month we welcome back bonsai professional Mike Lane. Mike is from Florida and has an extensive knowledge of tropicals and all things Shohin.
