PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome back to another year of Dai Ichi Bonsai Kai, it looks to be full of exciting events throughout the LA basin. Starting in January we have one of the best shows in the country, Baikoen Bonsai Kenkyukai “Winter Silhouette.” This will show bonsai in its dormant state, branches not hidden, no leaves all of the structure exposed to the viewer. They also have the best dinner/show event for any club show that I have ever been to.

January has brought a tremendous amount of rain to the California bonsai environment, not needing to water your trees, and the added benefit of rain water to nourish them is a blessing. Cooler temperatures have pushed trees into changing color and giving Los Angeles a little feeling of fall. All this rain and wet weather has pushed the increase of fungal problems and an increase of insects. We see cooler temperatures but not freezing temperatures, mites, aphids, ants, all types are increasing. Start the year off and create a plan on fungicides and insecticides to stop these problems.

We lost a great friend of the club and a strong supporter of bonsai at the end of last year.  Fred Floresca passed away in December after a long fight with cancer. I will miss his friendship and strong support for the club.

This month, we look forward to bringing back our friend Albert Rivera. who will be teaching us his tips and techniques for grafting. Albert grew up in the San Fernando Valley and became interested in bonsai while attending the Japanese Community Center Obon festivals. Volunteering at the Obon festival and showing interest in the bonsai and niwaki/yard tree pruning provided Albert the opportunity to start working with the bonsai group. Albert became the only Hispanic member of the bonsai/pruning group supporting the bonsai and landscape pines in the San Fernando Community. Currently teaching beginner and advanced bonsai at the Yamaguchi Bonsai Nursery as well as workshops and lectures for various SoCal clubs. See you then!
