PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Technically spring in Los Angeles doesn’t start until March 20th and winter has passed us by. We had our share of rain and cold weather, well for us that was cold weather. Repotting season will soon pass us by with the temperatures approaching the high 90’s, keep those roots well hydrated. The deciduous trees and pushing new growth and the flowering fruit trees are just about finished.

Remember your tree care for the season, fungicides and insecticides, organic or non-organic prepare a plan and try to stick with it. Seth Nelson posted a great guide on tree maintenance on his Facebook and Instagram page.

Our 40th Annual show and sale is fast approaching, May 9th and 10th.  If you have any questions or would like to donate your time for any jobs talk with our Show Chair Rod Vilencia.

This month’s presenter is Steve Salisian from Sierra Madre Bonsai. Steve’s journey into bonsai began gardening with his grandmother Pauline, helping her grow flowers and chrysanthemums for her flower shows. Among her plants were a few bonsai trees, and she eventually gave Steve one of his own.

Trips to San Gabriel Nursery introduced him to the larger bonsai world, where he met Richard Ota and soon joined local clubs including Santa Anita Bonsai Society and Kofu Kai. Through the community he connected with David Nguy and later studied with Boon Manakitivipart in Hayward before joining the earliest classes at Bonsai Mirai with Ryan Neil. Steve helped launch an early bonsai video program that later evolved into Mirai Live and continued studying advanced techniques at Mirai from 2011–2018.

Over the past 20 years he has created and sold hundreds of bonsai trees, specializing in developing new material from field-grown trees and yamadori. Today he runs Sierra Madre Bonsai, where he focuses on creating new bonsai subjects, teaching beginners, and introducing new audiences to the art through events like Beer & Bonsai.
